Chat is Down
Alright, chat is down. I looked on Community Central about it since Wikia updates every Tuesday and Thursday. Here's what I found.
"Quick note regarding current issues with Chat: we're currently looking into what is causing it to fail."
"Update: it looks like we know the cause - it's due to socket.io's security certificate expiring (a feature used by Chat). Unfortunately, this is likely out of our hands - someone messed up on their side. This also means I cannot provide an ETA on a fix, frustratingly."
"A quick glance at Twitter mentions of socket.io shows a lot of other people seeing similar issues on other sites."
"Apologies that this is affecting you guys!"
Okay, for those of you that are actually interested or still don't know what's happening, here's what that means and why it causes chat to fail. Just about every website on the Internet has a security certificate detailing the protection protocols for the website. They're not supposed to expire, as once a certificate is gained, it stays. Every browser has a built-in feature to warn you about traversing to a website with no security certificate. Since it's supposed to warn you and it's a component chat uses, it never opens chat since you can never give it permission to continue with no certificate, hence causing chat to fail.
As you've seen, there's no fix so far and no ETA. However, there is another option. Here is a temporary chat room to go to while it is fixed.
I will keep watch and update you all.
